Champions Man City eye £50m swoop to beat Tottenham to Zaha

Premier League champions Manchester City are ready to make a £50m swoop to land Crystal Palace wideman Wilfried Zaha, according to the Mirror.

That could be a major blow to Tottenham’s summer transfer hopes, as they have been linked with a move for the winger in both February and March of this year.

What’s the latest, then?

The report states that Pep Guardiola has taken a shine to Zaha in recent weeks and views him as an alternative to signing Riyad Mahrez to add attacking flair in defence of the Premier League title next season.

That bid could trump Tottenham, who were reported by the Daily Mail in March as being interested in Zaha – who is only valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt – but only willing to bid £40m.

Not many players could turn down City

As much as Mauricio Pochettino has worked wonders with young players and built an exciting Tottenham side, which has managed to qualify for the Champions League despite spending a season away from home at Wembley, Pep Guardiola is the manager in English football that all the top talent will want to play under at this moment in time.

If Tottenham want to carry on improving, it is the spending power and draw of playing in City’s sizzling style of football that they must compete against in the transfer market; which is a task made even more difficult by the fact it is a World Cup summer, where players are tied up with their countries and can boost their price even higher with a good showing in Russia.

That is the standard that Spurs, and the other members of the top six simply must match.
