Chelsea made a last-ditch attempt to hijack Manchester United’s £36m deal for Monaco starlet Anthony Martial, as reported by the Daily Star.
The 19-year-old stole all the headlines on transfer deadline day when the Old Trafford outfit made him the most expensive teenager in history.
But it is now being reported that Premier League champions Chelsea tried to beat Man United to Martial’s signature, and even matched the astronomical fee Louis van Gaal agreed to pay Monaco for him.
But Monaco refused to do business with the Blues because they were unwilling to go back on their agreement with Man United.
It is believed Chelsea were also tracking Martial and were surprised to see Man United make such a move for him during the final 48 hours of the transfer window.
That forced Chelsea in to trying to hijack the deal at the very last minute, but without success.
Martial scored 12 goals in 46 appearances for Monaco last season.
