Chelsea & Man City in race with Euro giants for £51.6m star

Both Manchester City and Chelsea are in a four-way race with Real Madrid and Barcelona for the signature of Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez, according to reports from Marca.

The 21-year-old has emerged as one of the top centre-backs in La Liga over the course of the past two seasons, slotting seamlessly into Diego Simeone’s side, replacing veteran Brazilian Joao Miranda in the process.

His rugged playing style and composure have both been lauded given his tender age, and, naturally, many top sides have been aligned with the Uruguayan.

Reports claim that both Man City and Chelsea are among the chasing pack, as are Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Atletico are, however, far from keen on the idea of losing the South American sensation, and are likely to hold out for a release clause-triggering £51.6m offer for the player.

Chelsea are thought to be in need to defensive reinforcements with John Terry’s future unclear, while City are likely to undergo a summer overhaul once Pep Guardiola is in place as manager.
