A few eyebrows were raised when Romelu Lukaku completed a permanent move to Everton in the summer following a relatively successful loan spell at Goodison Park.
Firstly, why was Jose Mourinho letting someone with clear raw potential leave, especially as the Blues were looking for an heir to Didier Drogba’s throne? And secondly, where did Everton find the money to break their club record to bring the Belgium international to the club?
Following 15 goals and six assists from 29 starts in England’s top flight last season, many Toffees expected the big striker to continue his form once completing his permanent move to Merseyside. However, that hasn’t been the case with Lukaku, as well as Roberto Martinez’s side, struggling to recreate last season’s impressive campaign.
Although the former West Bromwich Albion loanee has a respectable seven Premier League goals so far in the 2014/15 season, his average match rating – according to WhoScored – has dropped to 6.74 compared to 7.31 last season.
Have Chelsea dodged a bullet and made a tidy profit? Or will Everton have the last laugh?
Whatever the answer, the majority expect him to bag a goal or two at Stamford Bridge tonight…
