Seventeen years ago to this day, a young Frank Lampard scored his very first goal in the colours of Chelsea. Lampard would go on to become the club’s highest ever goal scorer and arguably their best ever player.
Lampard’s 13 year career at Chelsea was a phenomenal one and one of the greatest in Premier League history. When he left Stamford Bridge in 2014 the England international finished on a total of 211 goals for the Blues, nine more than second most Bobby Tambling.
The midfielder’s first goal came in a rainy UEFA Cup, now Europa League, match at Stamford Bridge against Bulgarian side Levski Sofia. Having already been 2-0 up in the match, the 23-year-old Lampard found himself in a one-on-one position with the keeper and slotted in the goal on the rebound after his initial shot was stopped.
During his time in West London , Lampard won a total of three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, one Europa League and most notably the Champions League in 2012, where he captained the side in the final against Bayern Munich.
Here are some Twitter reactions by Chelsea fans as they remember that day where Lampard opened his Chelsea account…
