Axel Witsel’s former agent, Francesco Ligenti, has revealed that the Belgium international could join Chelsea this summer, with contact having been made ahead of a move.
The burly central midfielder currently plies his trade in Russia with Zenit Saint Petersburg, whom he helped to league glory last season.
Since then the Belgian has revealed that he’s seeking a fresh challenge, and reports have claimed that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has taken it upon himself to ensure that he will be playing at Stamford Bridge next season.
Although he’s no longer his official agent, Ligenti has revealed that Witsel, who wants to play top level European football, has been the subject of transfer talks with the Premier League champions:
“The player wants to play in the Champions League,” he is quoted by Metro.
“Chelsea? Here there have been some contacts, we will see if it happens.”
Witsel joined Zenit from Portuguese giants Benfica in a deal worth around £28m back in 2012, following a host of big name players to Russian football.
Should he join Chelsea, Jose Mourinho would possess one of the strongest midfields in English football, with Nemanja Matic and Cesc Fabregas already in West London.
