Barcelona plot move for Chelsea star

Chelsea keeper Petr Cech

Barcelona are said to be planning a summer move for Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech, according to the Daily Star.

The Catalan giants are understood to have already made an enquiry about the availability of the keeper, as they step up their search for a replacement for Victor Valdes who is set to quit the Spanish champions at the end of the season.

Cech’s future was the subject of some speculation this summer, but the 31-year-old opted to stay at Stamford Bridge in order to work with Jose Mourinho once more.

Cech enjoyed three successful seasons with Mourinho, who still rates him as one of the world’s best goalkeepers.

However the ‘Special One’ is under increasing pressure to bring through a new generation of young Chelsea stars, and is a big admirer of Thibaut Courtois who is currently in his third season of a highly successful loan spell at Atletico Madrid.

Mourinho is aware that a decision on whether Courtois returns to Stamford Bridge to take the number one position is fast approaching, with the club already having received a string of offers for the young Belgian who is unlikely to be keen to sit on the Chelsea bench having proved himself a top keeper already in Spain.

Reports in Spain suggest Barcelona are planning a January offer for Cech which would see Victor Valdes move in the opposite direction, although both Cech and the club are adamant he will see out the season at Stamford Bridge at least.

Barcelona are also said to be interested in signing Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina once his loan spell at Napoli finishes at the end of the season.
