Michy Batshuayi was enjoying a red-hot second half of the season out on loan at Borussia Dortmund before injury curtailed his season and the Evening Standard report that the German giants will swoop for the Belgian in the summer.

The frontman was never trusted under Antonio Conte but if the Italian departs Stamford Bridge in the summer, there is no reason he couldn't replicate his Bundesliga form in England next season.

What's the story, then?

The report states that Batshuayi's injury has not put Dortmund off bidding for the man valued at £36m by Transfermarkt, after he banged in nine goals from 14 appearances across all competitions in Germany.

Their request to insert a purchase option into the January loan deal for the former Marseille man was apparently rejected and the bidding must start at £50m to convince Chelsea to part company with Batshuayi.

Dortmund might well have that cash after selling Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Arsenal in January and much will depend on the opinion of the new manager at the Bridge if, as expected, Conte is dismissed.

Chelsea should keep him

Batshuayi is an exuberant character who has clearly flourished in Germany but he never had the confidence of Conte and that held him back.

A new manager would represent a fresh start and going into next season with Alvaro Morata, Olivier Giroud, Batshuayi and Tammy Abraham to choose from would represent a diverse and potent array of weapons for the incoming boss to choose from.

Batshuayi is the right age to become the spearhead of the Chelsea attack for years to come and keeping him around the place would release some of the pressure on Alvaro Morata, who has clearly struggled to adapt to life at Chelsea.
