Benitez urges team to help Fernando Torres

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres and manager Rafa BenitezChelsea manager Rafael Benitez has called upon his squad to help misfiring striker Fernando Torres rediscover his form.

The Spaniard has failed to make the impact many had predicted he would following his £50m arrival fro Premier League rivals Liverpool in 2011.

It has been suggested that Benitez has been drafted in as Roberto Di Matteo’s successor by Roman Abramovich to get the best out of the forward following a successful spell managing him at his former club.

However, the coach insisted that he alone cannot help the 28-year-old turn his form around and has urged the rest of the squad to help:

“Torres can come back, but how far? I don’t know.” He is quoted by The Metro.

“It depends on the team. Yes he can improve, I am sure he can improve, but it depends on the team to help him.”

He also rebuffed claims that he must select Torres following his predecessor’s decision to drop the player during their Champions League defeat to Juventus:

“I am not under pressure to pick him because Daniel Sturridge is still injured so I don’t have many options.”

The ex-Liverpool manager went on to discuss his frosty reception from the Stamford Bridge crowd, insisting that he wants his record on the pitch to win over the doubters:

“I understand the fans and how they feel,

“I will try to prove I am here for the right reasons and I want to win.

“Imagine if you are a player who is struggling. I would say: Stay focused, try to do your job, don’t get distracted, concentrate on your football”.

“For me it is the same, I want to concentrate on coaching, improve the players and bring the fans back.”
