Chelsea youngster Ryan Bertrand says that he would love fellow left-back Ashley Cole to remain at Stamford Bridge, according to Goal.
The 23-year-old Bertrand has had a great six months since manager Roberto Di Matteo took charge at Chlesea. As well as playing in a Champions League final and the Olympics, Bertrand has also put pen to paper on a new five-year-contract at the European champions.
Despite this, the England international is currently second fiddle to one of the world’s greatest left-backs, Ashley Cole. Cole is currently waiting to be awarded with an improved contract offer after reportedly rejecting a one-year extension. Transfer speculation surrounding Cole has been hushed however thanks to Di Matteo being adamant that Cole will resolve contractual issues before the next transfer window arrives in January.
Bertrand believes that 31-year-old should be offered an extended stay at the club, “Yes I want Ashley to stay. He has been a fantastic servant for the club and he rightly deserves what he is asking for.”
As well as left-back, Bertrand has also shown that he has the ability to play as a left-midfielder. He believes that his capability as a utility player enables him to make regular appearances for Chelsea, “It doesn’t affect me or my game because I am getting plenty of chances to play.”
The London born Bertrand believes that a contract extension for Cole would not only benefit the club but also himself, “I have learnt a lot from him and the longer he stays the more I will continue to learn.”
The Chelsea man also admitted that the competition for the left-back spot doesn’t affect the relationship he has with Cole, “I probably could have a bit of banter with him about me taking his place in the team because we have a really good relationship but we’re more than happy playing together and leave it as it is.”
Bertrand scored the second of Chelsea’s six against a beleaguered Wolverhampton Wanderers side last night. Bertrand blasted home unmarked after some good work from young Brazilian striker Piazon.
Despite an impressive performance last night, Bertrand is expected to start from the substitute’s bench on Saturday as the Premier League leaders face their toughest start to the season yet when they travel across London to face an in-form Arsenal side.
