Not so long ago Nemanja Matic was being hailed as the best holding midfielder in English football. The giant Serbian re-signed for the Blues from Benfica in January 2014, but he really shone during the title-winning 2014/15 campaign, when he anchored Jose Mourinho’s midfield perfectly.
However, his drop-off last term was alarming. The Eastern European looked off the pace and cumbersome in the centre of the pitch as the Londoners slumped to a midtable finish.
He has, though, improved under the guidance of Antonio Conte, with one of his best showings of the campaign having come over the weekend just gone:
As the stats show, Matic was imposing against the reigning champions. While wining four tackles and making four interceptions, the 28-year-old managed to make 87% of his passes stick while laying on an assist for Diego Costa.
Is he back to his best? It’s a bit early to make such a bold claim, but he’s on the right track under Antonio Conte.
