Chelsea boss adamant Blues star will stay put

Chelsea's David Luiz celebrates his goal against Aston Villa

Chelsea are adamant that David Luiz will remain at Stamford Bridge this season, despite renewed interest from Spanish giants Barcelona, according to the Daily Mirror.

A £45million bid for the Brazilian has been mentioned, with the Catalan giants in the market for a new centre back.

And the fact Luiz sat out Chelsea’s glamour friendly with AC Milan in New Jersey over the weekend, has simply added more fuel to the rumours.

However, Chelsea insist the 26-year-old was simply being rested as a precaution after picking up a minor hamstring injury in training, and have absolutely no desire to sell one of their stars of last season.

Mourinho is looking to establish the defender as first choice centre back this season, and hopes to warn Barcelona off before an official offer comes in, concerned it may turn the Brazilian’s head.

Mourinho has continued to talk up Luiz since arriving at Stamford Bridge for his second spell, insisting the defender will play a massive part in the club’s future.

“David has come back with us fantastically and we have to use his quality,” Mourinho said.

“He has big self-confidence and self-esteem, especially when he comes up from the back with the ball.

“Can he improve defensively? Of course. But it is my job to try always to improve players.”

Club owner Roman Abramovich is also understood to be a huge fan of Luiz, and has no desire to sell the player he signed from Benfica for £21million in January 2011.
