The Spaniard has made just one appearance under ‘The Special One’ this term, and was a shock exclusion from Monday night’s 0-0 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
This, coupled with the arrival of Brazilian winger Willian, has seen rumours surrounding the Blues’ 2012/13 player of the season circulate, with Arsenal and Tottenham thought to be keen on his signature.
However, Mourinho insists that there is no possibility of Mata leaving, and that both he and the player are happy with the current situation.
“He didn’t play against Man United, it was my option. I have always reason for the options,” Mourinho told Sky Sports.
“I feel that it’s my duty to explain to the players the reasons for my options – and I do.
“I don’t feel it’s my duty to explain to the media the reason for my options. I don’t always do (it).
“Everything is clear between me and the player. We have no problems.
“I think he’s a very important player for us. He wants to be a very important player for us.
“He wants to stay. I want him to stay, the club want him to stay. There is no story.”
Mata faces a tough task to force his way in Mourinho’s starting XI, with the likes of Oscar, Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne, Victor Moses and now Willian all battling for action.
The 25-year-old’s agent and father were spotted recently Arsenal, further fuelling speculation of a move.
