Chelsea boss wants loanee to battle for future

Jose Mourinho wants Thibaut Courtois to return to Chelsea from Atletico Madrid this summer to battle Petr Cech for a starting berth, according to reports from the Daily Mail.

The Belgian goalkeeper has developed into one of Europe’s top stoppers in recent seasons, but is yet to play a game for the Blues.

Upon his 2011 arrival from Genk Courtois was immediately loaned to Atleti, where he has starred in their recent successes – including last season’s shock La Liga title triumph.

With Cech firmly established as Chelsea’s number one, there has been talk that the 22-year-old will be sent for a fourth successive season in Madrid.

However, Mourinho has spoken to him since Atletico’s Champions League Final loss, and has told him that he wants him back at Stamford Bridge.

But much hinges on first-team guarantees, with Courtois known to be desperate for regular action – which he is certain of at the Vicente Calderon.

There is also a feeling among some senior members of staff at Chelsea that the young ‘keeper would benefit from another year away from the club.
