Chelsea are hoping that a spate of managerial changes across Europe will enable them to secure Antonio Conte's successor at a low cost, according to the Telegraph.

For a club that has spent millions in pursuit of success in the past, it is a both surprising and poorly thought-out decision.

What's the story, then?

The report states that Roman Abramovich would like to not have to spend big twice; to fire Antonio Conte and then to replace him.

That has led them to scour the managerial situations of various clubs around Europe in pursuit of a replacement at the right price, but also a job for Conte to walk into, which would reportedly help them £9m in compensation.

The report goes on to say that a "B-list" of candidates has been drawn up in the event that none of the top names on their radar can be lured.

Chelsea have to spend big to get their man

There are numerous directions in which Chelsea can go from here. Abramovich might want someone who, unlike Conte, is more willing to cede power to the board and directors and just coach the team.

The Blues could get someone with more of a focus on youth development, to finally make the most of all the investment in the next generation made at Stamford Bridge; a West London version of Mauricio Pochettino.

They might also plump for someone who can, after more than a decade of spending, deliver Abramovich the kind of flowing football historically associated with Barcelona and currently with Manchester City as well.

That's a decision to be made at board level, but those are the factors on which it should be made. Not money, which Chelsea have plenty of, even with a stadium move on the horizon.

The signing of Conte's successor is the most important move of the transfer window for Chelsea; they cannot cut corners on it.
