Chelsea catch Man United napping in French pursuit

Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala

Chelsea look to have taken the lead in the race to sign Porto’s Eliaquim Mangala, according to the Mirror.

With David Gill gone and David Moyes on holiday, nobody is handling the transfers at Manchester United, who were also linked with the defender.

And it seems Chelsea have taken advantage of this, as they look to sign the 22-year-old. Mourinho had been watching Mangala whilst he was manager of Real Madrid, and looks to continue his interest in the Frenchman now he is at Stamford Bridge.

Porto want £30million for Mangala, but Chelsea are expected to to start the bidding at around £23million.

Mangala joined the Portuguese club from Standard Liege two years ago for just £5.5million. But now Porto are looking for nearly six times that amount to let him go.

Porto have already sold two players this summer, losing James Rodriguez and Joao Moutinho to Monaco for a combined fee of £60million.

Mourinho is looking to pressure centre-backs David Luiz, Gary Cahill, Branislav Ivanovic and captain John Terry, as he aims to strengthen the Blues’ defence over the summer.

The Portuguese manager has also told Romelu Lukaku that he will have a role to play in a Chelsea shirt next season, after a successful loan spell at West Brom.
