Chelsea are closing in on Roma midfielder Daniele de Rossi, reports The Mirror.

Jose Mourinho is keen on bringing the Italian to the Premier League, and has been handed a boost in his pursuit.

Roma had been reluctant to let go of the midfielder, but could be prepared to sell the 29-year-old after signing Kevin Strootman. The Dutch midfielder had been a transfer target for Manchester United, but he has now joined the Serie A side instead.

This has opened the door for de Rossi to move to Stamford Bridge, as long as the Blues meet Roma's demands. The Wolves are asking for £11million plus Brazilian full-back Wallace on a season-long loan in return for de Rossi's signature.

Mourinho is a long term fan of de Rossi, and tried to sign the Italian during his times at Inter Milan and Real Madrid. It could be third time lucky for the Portuguese manager, who will offer de Rossi £110,000-a-week.

Chelsea have already made three signings this summer, securing deals for Marko van Ginkel, Mark Schwarzer and Andre Schurrle.

Mourinho's first league game back in charge of the Blues is on August 17th, as Chelsea host newly promoted Hull on the opening day of the new season.

Would de Rossi do well at Stamford Bridge? Is he what the Blues need?
