Chelsea closing in on shock deal for veteran freebie

Chelsea are set to snap up experienced free agent Marco Amelia in an attempt to address their goalkeeping concerns, according to reports from The Mirror.

The Blues are currently without No.1 Thibaut Courtois, who will be out of action until December with a knee injury, leaving Jose Mourinho with only summer signing Asmir Begovic and rookie Jamal Blackman to call upon.

Should the Bosnian suffer a fitness blow of receive a suspension, then the 21-year-old back-up man will be in line to start for the defending champions, which is seen as a cause for concern in West London.

And reports claim that Chelsea have reacted by handing former AC Milan stopper Amelia a trial with a view to signing him up on a short-term basis as cover for Begovic.

The 33-year-old is currently without a club after being released at the end of last season by Serie B outfit Perugia.

The previous summer he left Milan before enjoying a short spell with amateur Italian side Rocca Priora.

Amelia was a part of the Azzurri’s successful 2006 World Cup campaign, albeit his last international outing was six years ago.
