Chelsea have confirmed on their official website that defender Papy Djilobodji has joined Sunderland in a £8million move.
The Senegalese centre-half was signed by the Blues last summer after attempts to pry John Stones away from Everton were unsuccessful.
However, Djilobodji was unable to break into the Stamford Bridge starting XI and did not make an appearance in the Premier League for the West London club.
A loan stint at Werder Bremen followed, with Sunderland’s new manager David Moyes moving quickly to land the African enforcer this summer.
Djilobodji is the Scotsman’s first signing since taking over from new England manager Sam Allardyce at the Stadium of Light, but a handful more recruits are expected to join the Wearside club before the close of the transfer window.
Chelsea are believed to be in the market for a new centre-half themselves but clearly felt that the former Nantes defender was not up to the task.
