Chelsea dealt major blow with suspension of star midfielder ahead of cup final

Chelsea have been dealt a major blow ahead of next weekend’s League Cup final against Tottenham Hotspur after Nemanja Matic was sent off against Burnley in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge, which means the Serb will miss Sunday’s Wembley showdown through suspension.

The Blues have every reason to feel aggrieved at the 26 year-old’s red card, after the midfielder was given his matching orders for shoving Burnley’s Ashley Barnes in retaliation for a horrific tackle which should have seen the Clarets man sent off himself.

Matic rejoined Chelsea in January of last year from Benfica having originally been sold by the West London club to the Portuguese giants in 2011, and is now likely to sit out of the League Cup final against Spurs as well as the Blues’ next two Premier League matches against West Ham and Southampton.

The draw against Burnley means that Chelsea remain at the top of the Premier League with 60 points.
