Chelsea enter race for sought-after striker

Aston Villa forward Christian BentekeChelsea are set to take on London rivals Tottenham in the race for Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke, according to reports from SportsDirect News.

The Belgian was one of the Premier League’s standout performers in his debut season, notching a staggering 19 goals.

This form has alerted Spurs, who are in the market for a new striker this summer, but Chelsea are now set to join them in the race, as their hopes of landing Uruguayan ace Edinson Cavani falter.

Napoli want in excess of £50million for the front-man, a sum that the Blues are not keen to match.

Jose Mourinho is now willing to switch his attention to Benteke, who is likely to cost around half of that figure.

‘The Special One’ would be happy to push through a deal for that amount, with Benteke likely to demand much less in terms of a salary.

He is also attracted to the 22-year-old’s physical presence, after enjoying much success with Didier Drogba leading the line during his last spell at Stamford Bridge.

Villa are desperate to hold onto their star man, but know that if he actively pursues a move there is little they can do to stop him and maintain a healthy atmosphere behind the scenes.

Chelsea fans, would you be happy to see Christian Benteke up front? Or should you be stepping up your pursuit of Edinson Cavani?
