The Frenchman played a pivotal role in the Black Cats’ Premier League survival last season and is rapidly emerging as one of the division’s most in-demand defenders.
Both clubs have been mooted as summer suitors once again by The Daily Star and the 27-year-old appears to be pushing for a move, having handed in a transfer request at the Stadium of Light.
Kone cited a lack of assurances over his future at the club, but manager David Moyes has insisted the former Lorient star is in his first team plans – and that he’ll sign a new contract on September 1st.
As quoted by The Daily Star, he said in today’s pre-match press conference; “We’ve told Lamine Kone he will be offered a new contract in September.
“Lamine is very much part of my plans. We will renew his contract on the 1 September. Lamine is a big part of the team, the fans like him and we need him.”
