The Blues see Barkley as a natural replacement for the ageing Frank Lampard, and are prepared to sell Lukaku to Everton in order to sign the Englishman. Lukaku has spent the season on loan at Goodison Park, where he has scored 12 league goals.
Barkley, who scored a superb solo goal against Newcastle in midweek, has had a fine season for the Toffees, and has been tipped to make the plane for the World Cup by some pundits. And with Roberto Martinez keen on keeping Lukaku past his loan period, Jose Mourinho is eyeing up a trade deal too sign Barkley.
Everton are huge fans of Barkley and are expected to fight until the end to keep the youngster at Goodison Park, but Mourinho is ready to test Martinez’s grip with a tempting offer. Barkley would come in to replace Lampard, who is expected to join LA Galaxy in the summer.
Lukaku is spending his second season away from Stamford Bridge, after playing for West Brom last campaign. The Belgian was loaned out on the last day of the summer transfer window, just after he missed a penalty in Chelsea’s defeat in the UEFA Super Cup.
