Chelsea eye Liverpool target to replace Drogba

Chelsea are considering a move for Inter Milan’s in-form striker Mauro Icardi as Didier Drogba nears the end of his career, according to reports from the London Evening Standard.

The Argentine has been in excellent form for the Serie A side this season, with his goal tally standing at a whopping 13 in 22 games.

Chelsea scouts – as well as those from Liverpool and Manchester City – are understood to have been present for Inter’s 3-0 weekend win over Palermo, in which Icardi netted twice – and failed to celebrate either.

Further to this, the South American is currently locked in contract talks with the San Siro giants, with his £11,000-per-week earnings one of the lowest figures at the club.

He wants closer to £43k-per-week, but the Italian side are reluctant to go above a figure of £28k.

This has alerted Chelsea, who are plotting for life after Drogba.

The 36-year-old Ivorian is now at the back end of a glittering career, and may step into more of a coaching role.

Liverpool have been heavily linked with Icardi, and even chased him after selling Luis Suarez last summer.
