Chelsea face fight to keep midfield star

Juan MataChelsea look set for a January battle to keep Juan Mata at Stamford Bridge, with Italian giants Juventus and Napoli interested, according to reports from the Daily Star.

Despite being one of the Blues’ star performers over the course of the past few years, the Spaniard’s future in London under Jose Mourinho is far from clear.

‘The Special One’ is thought to be unconvinced by the playmaker’s abilities, and has often omitted him from his starting XI since taking control at Stamford Bridge.

Mata was linked with a deadline day move away from the club, however the likes of Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal were unable to tie up a deal.

However, the 25-year-old is set to be at the centre of another transfer tug-of-war in January, with Juve and Napoli keen.

The Serie A giants are keen to take advantage of Mata’s current situation and offer him regular first-team football in the run up to the 2014 World Cup.

Although he has claimed that he is happy to stay put, it I thought that such a proposal may be enough to tempt the ex-Valencia man into leaving Chelsea.

As well as Napoli and Juve, the likes of Manchester City, Barcelona and Manchester United are thought to be keen.
