Last season it looked as though David Luiz's career at Chelsea was coming to an end for a second time.

The Brazilian fell out of favour under then-manager Antonio Conte in just his second season back at the club.

Luiz had a three-year spell at Stamford Bridge between 2011 and 2014, during which he won the Champions League and Europa League.

The defender then left to join Paris Saint-Germain, but returned to the Blues in the summer of 2016.

If Conte had not left Chelsea in the summer, then it would have been no surprise if Luiz headed for the exit gates.

However, under current boss Maurizio Sarri, the Brazilian has been restored to the line-up as part of a back four.

The 31-year-old has moments of madness in him and his defensive attributes are not always on point, but his passion and desire to get the ball moving cannot be denied.

In Wednesday's 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the EFL Cup third round at Anfield, Luiz made a big impact when he came off the bench.

At one point he charged out with the ball from inside his own half before getting fouled by Jordan Henderson.

On Reddit, some Chelsea fans hit out at the defender's critics, with many hailing his dedication on the pitch.
