Gary Cahill has been out of favour at Chelsea this season and it looks as if his prolonged benching by Antonio Conte will cost him a place at this summer’s World Cup with England.
The suspicion has always been that Cahill’s lack of pace could be exploited and in a Blues side that has stuggled for form since the turn of the year, Conte has decided that he can no longer paper over such cracks.
Despite the fact that both club and country look as if they could do with an experienced centre-half who is comfortable in a three, he has remained out of favour, but that may change for the forthcoming crunch encounter between Chelsea and London rivals Tottenham.
The defender – valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt – could be recalled due to the injury sustained by Andreas Christensen but Chelsea fans are dreading the very thought of it. Here’s the best of the online reaction…
I would rather play Trevor Chalobah instead of Cahill
