Chelsea fans expected to see the much-anticipated first-team debut of Callum Hudson-Odoi in their opening Europa League match against PAOK on Thursday, but Maurizio Sarri opted not to include him in the team, not even on the bench.

Sarri named the teenager in his squad to travel to Greece but went for a rather strong line-up and bench with Willian captaining the team.

Hudson-Odoi made his professional debut for the Blues from the bench at the beginning of the year in a 3-0 win over Newcastle United in the FA Cup. He also got his first Premier League cap as a substitute a few days later in a match that saw Chelsea lose 3-0 to Bournemouth at home.

But, many thought he would be a regular figure in the Europa League this season, but following Thursday’s selection it seems that Sarri is cautious of giving younger players game-time with the likes of Ethan Ampadu also not featuring in the match.
