Marcos Alonso has been given an opportunity by Emerson Palmieri's injury to make the left-back position his own once again, and he has grabbed it with both hands.

It looked as though the Spain international would be nothing but a back-up option when Chelsea manager Frank Lampard selected the 25-year-old former AS Roma man for five of the first six Premier League matches of the campaign. However, he was forced to bring in Alonso when the Italy international picked up an issue whilst with the Azzurri.

Since then, the 28-year-old has been one of the Blues' best players, averaging a WhoScored rating of 7.24 in the league this term. He even netted against Newcastle United, but that shouldn't come as much of a surprise - he is the highest-scoring defender since he returned to English football in 2016.

He proved his goalscoring prowess once again on Monday, albeit in training. With Willy Caballero providing a target by holding on to the bar and post, Alonso effortlessly swung the ball into the top right hand corner of the net.
