Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso has been called into the Spain squad for the first time for their upcoming international friendlies with Germany and Argentina.

Alonso is hardly a spring chicken at 27 years of age, but he has been handed a call-up by La Roja boss Julen Lopetegui.

The wing-back, who is valued at £27m by transfermarkt.co.uk, will hope to impress for his country ahead of the 2018 World Cup as he eyes a spot in Russia.

Chelsea have had their problems this season, but Alonso has once again been a consistent performer for the reigning English champions.

Indeed, the Spaniard has scored seven times and registered three assists in 40 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea during the 2017-18 campaign.

The Blues posted an interview from Alonso on their official Twitter page earlier this week, and the club's supporters were on hand to hail the defender, who has previously been linked with a move to Barcelona.
