Having captained the England U21s during their short-lived participation in the European Championships this summer, Jake Clarke-Salter may have felt his time at Chelsea had come.

The 21-year-old had spent the majority of his senior Blues career out on loan at Vitesse in the Netherlands and with Sunderland, but Frank Lampard's arrival as manager certainly raised the hopes of Chelsea's youngsters.

However, the club have now confirmed that Clarke-Salter has signed a new contract with the club, which will see his future tied down at Stamford Bridge until 2022, before joining Birmingham City on a season-long loan for the upcoming campaign.

After hearing the news that the young centre-back had committed his long-term future to the club, Chelsea fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the matter.

Many Blues supporters felt slightly frustrated by the decision to give Clarke-Salter a new deal and questioned why the club hadn't considered selling the defender.

Indeed, some even suggested that the Englishman was simply taking up a loan spot and insisted that he wasn't good enough for Frank Lampard's side.
