Chelsea acquired Kovacic from Real Madrid on a permanent deal this summer for £40million, despite their two-window transfer ban, having managed to avoid the FIFA sanctions by having the Croatian registered from his spell on loan.

Kovacic featured in 51 games across all competitions during his loan spell under Maurizio Sarri, and has added a further 16 to his tally under Frank Lampard this season.

The 25-year-old has played in each of the Stamford Bridge natives' Premier League fixtures since Lampard took up his position in the dugout, starting seven, along with two of the Blues' three Champions League ties.

His most recent outing against Watford, which won him the Chelsea supporter's Man of the Match award, featured 139 touches, a 100% tackle success rate, one interception, four successful dribbles and 141 passes - the most of any player, per WhoScored data.
