Ross Barkley made his first England appearance since 2016 when he started against Croatia on Friday night. The Nations League encounter finished 0-0 after a far from thrilling 90 minutes that played out in eerie silence, due to the match being conducted ‘behind closed doors’, in Rijeka.
However, the fixture will live long in the memory for Barkley as it announced his long-awaited return to the Three Lions set up after an absence induced by injury and poor form at club level.
The 24-year-old midfielder has impressed so far this season for Chelsea, though, and fully deserved his call up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad. Whilst he could do little to stand out against Croatia, Barkley ought to take a confidence boost from his return to the international team.
After the goalless match, plenty of proud Blues fans took to Twitter to discuss Barkley’s international involvement. Check out some of the reaction below…
Honestly I’ve never really rated Barkley but he’s working so hard, recovered from his injury without complaining and is taking care of himself. Deserves the chances he’s getting, he shouldn’t be judged tonight when he was playing alongside Henderson and Dier. #CFC
