Has there been a more perplexing transfer than Danny Drinkwater to Chelsea? Okay, maybe Carlos Tevez to West Ham, but the England international has been cast off to the proverbial footballing wilderness since his arrival from Leicester, and apart from a Community Shield outing, failed to make a single appearance last season under Maurizio Sarri.

But with the Italian gone and Frank Lampard potentially coming in to replace him, reports claim Drinkwater may have a Chelsea future after all.

The Sun have suggested that due to competition rules with the Champions League, which requires eight of the 25-man squad to have been trained by clubs of the same league between the ages of 15 and 21, Drinkwater could help the Blues with meeting that quota.

The news saw Chelsea fans take to Twitter to air their opinion on the matter and many were left furious that the former Leicester star could somehow salvage his Stamford Bridge career.

Loads of fans of the west London side were ruthless in their assessment and felt Drinkwater wasn't up to the required standard, delivering an ominous warning about how the side would do if the midfielder returned to first-team contention.

Indeed, despite Lampard not officially being named as manager yet, some fans even called for the club legend to be sacked and stated that the club would be "finished" if they brought Drinkwater back.
