Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata once again struggled to make an impact in his side’s goalless draw against Arsenal in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final tie at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night, and Blues fans have slammed manager Antonio Conte for selling Diego Costa and then signing his fellow Spaniard in the summer.
Soon after the end of last season it was reported that Conte had text Costa to let him know that he wasn’t part of his plans for the current campaign, and the Premier League holders signed Morata from Real Madrid as Costa returned to Spain to join former club Atletico Madrid.
The 25-year-old has scored 12 goals in 29 appearances in all competitions for the west London outfit this term, but he is failing to make the same impression and be as much of a nuisance for defenders like Costa was, and his disappointing showing against the Gunners followed another poor one against the same opposition at the end of 2017, when he missed three one-on-one chances in a 2-2 draw.
Chelsea supporters were quick to have their say on the summer decision by Conte via social media, and while one said it is “more ridiculous every day”, another said “I can’t understand why we replaced a great striker with an average one”.
Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
Decisions of Conte forcing Diego Costa out to sign Morata are becoming more ridiculous everyday now

Very disappointing that @ChelseaFC @Chelsea_HQ can't win arsenal even with Wenger at the stand. I wonder how you are planning to win at emirate with Wenger back at his duty post. Morata and batsman can't win anything. Conte shouldn't have let Costa leave. That our problem

He’s an average striker, Costa was amazing so I can’t understand why we replaced a great striker with an average one. I don’t see us winning big competitions with Morata

There is need to get a striker. Conte made a big mistake in discharging Costa. Batshuayi needs to be offload and Morata isn't delivering for us. #CHEARS

Morata isn't even half the player Costa was

This was a game to win . With this coach I don't even see hazards impact ; no wonder he wants to leave .
He is Soo defensive minded and wat was he thinking bringing in wasteful Morata and sending Diego Costa away . No wonder the call him the 🤡

The worry began the moment Alvaro Morata became Chelsea's replacement for Costa..the difference between then and now is that not knowing their mistake. What a life!

Chelsea shouldn't have sold Diego Costa. Poor without him. Even worse with Morata.

Seeing Morata's finishing from his foot is making me worry that does he actually know how to score from his foot??.To be honest @ChelseaFC made a mistake letting a proven goalscorer like Costa go and not bringing in a proven worldclass goalscorer.
