Chelsea fans slammed Michy Batshuayi before EFL Cup strike vs Manchester United

Lots of Chelsea fans were heavily critical of Michy Batshuayi’s first-half performance against Manchester United on Wednesday night, before the Belgian scored his side’s equalising goal in the Carabao Cup clash.

Batshuayi was handed a rare outing by head coach Frank Lampard in the EFL competition, having only listed the £90,000-per-week forward in his starting line-up once before the midweek meeting.

His prior start likewise came in the Carabao Cup when he struck a brace against Grimsby Town, and Batshuayi added his fifth of the season against the Red Devils following goals from the bench against Southampton and Ajax.

The 26-year-old’s effort on Wednesday night came with great strength, pace and power to drive from the halfway line to the edge of the box, where he unleashed a composed strike into the bottom corner to pull Chelsea level.

Lampard’s side had fallen behind following a first-half penalty by Marcus Rashford after Marcos Alonso fouled Dan James, and would go on to lose when the England striker added his second with a thunderous free-kick.

Chelsea supporters had been heavily critical of Batshuayi’s performance before the Belgian scored his 24th goal for the West London side, though, with fans flocking to social media to vent their frustrations at his ‘painful’ display.

Batshuayi had attempted one shot before the break that was blocked and misplaced 54% of his 13 passes, only three of which were attempted in the final third, per WhoScored data.

Following the interval, he only managed to add eight more passes to his tally, plus two dribbles, one aerial duel and one other shot than his goal.
