Chelsea fans think Italy could target Conte after World Cup qualification failure

Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1958 after they were beaten 1-0 across their two-legged play-off match with Sweden, and Chelsea fans are worried that the Azzurri could target Antonio Conte to replace Gian Piero Ventura.

The Italians failed to find the breakthrough they needed at the San Siro on Monday night to ensure they went to Russia next summer, with the goalless draw enough to eliminate them from the competition following Sweden’s 1-0 win on Friday.

While Ventura has yet to be fired it seems almost inevitable that it will happen, and Italy could look to target Blues boss Conte following his successful spell in charge of the national team previously – he led them to the quarter-finals of Euro 2016.

Chelsea supporters were quick to have their say on the future of the 48-year-old via social media, with one saying ‘Italy will want Conte back’, and another saying they hope the Italian federation “doesn’t come knocking on Roman’s door”.
