Chelsea fans want club to sign Dries Mertens after Belgium World Cup display

Napoli attacker Dries Mertens impressed and scored a stunning goal for Belgium in their 3-0 win against Panama in their opening 2018 World Cup group match on Monday, and Chelsea fans have urged their club to sign the forward, rated at £27m by Transfermarkt.

The 31-year-old started on the right side of a front three also containing Premier League stars Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku, and while the Red Devils took a while to get going they eventually took the lead through Mertens’ spectacular dipping half-volley.

While he may have turned 31 last month, the Serie A star is showing no signs of decline and he has 90 goals and 58 assists in 235 appearances in all competitions for Napoli – including 22 goals and 12 assists in 49 outings in total last term.

Chelsea supporters, who also want their club to make a shock swoop for a two South American World Cup teammates who could potentially replace Victor Moses and Willian, were quick to have their say on Mertens’ latest display for his country via social media, and while one said the attacker is “needed at Chelsea”, another said “sign Mertens, surely Hazard will stay forever with us”.
