Chelsea grow increasingly confident over striker deal

Chelsea are growing increasingly confident that their pursuit of Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney will end in success, according to the Daily Mirror.

Jose Mourinho believes it is only a matter of time before the England star makes the switch to Stamford Bridge, although is resigned to the fact the deal will not be done in time for Rooney to return to Old Trafford with the Blues for their Premier League fixture on August 26.

United have continued to stand firm on the matter, insisting the 27-year-old is not for sale at any price, although Chelsea are confident they will get their man for around £30million.

Mourinho – who has described Rooney as his number one transfer target this summer – is set to return with a £24million offer for the striker this week.

The Blues are hoping that United will be succesful in their ongoing pursuit of Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas, as they believe that potential signing will justify them letting Rooney go.

Rooney has reportedly been looking to leave the club since the end of last season, with Sir Alex Ferguson stating after his final home game in charge that the Scouse ace had asked for a transfer.

Chelsea however, are sure United will not be willing to sell until the final days of the transfer window, with Mourinho willing to wait as long as is necessary.

David Moyes first home game in charge of the Champions sees United take on Chelsea on August 26, and will not want the build up to be overshadowed by Rooney’s potential return.
