The Blues are thought to be shifting their transfer focus towards young, emerging players and have been linked with a swoop for the 18-year-old over the course of the last few weeks.
Now reports suggest that Jose Mourinho’s side have made their interest in the teenager official with a £12m offer.
Meyer has a £15m release clause in his contract, but Chelsea are confident that they can snatch him away from the Bundesliga side for below that figure.
Schalke have a history of producing excellent player through their academy, and Meyer is seen as the latest talent to roll off of the conveyer belt.
It is believed that the bid was submitted in the week prior to the clubs’ Champions League clash – a game in which the starlet featured.
Schalke are keen to keep the playmaker, but may be tempted if the option to have him loaned back for the remainder of the season is inserted into any arrangement.
Manchester City have also been linked with Meyer, and may up their interest if an offer is accepted.
Could Max Meyer be a future Chelsea star?
