Chelsea have made a new centre-back one of their priorities heading into the summer, with Atletico Madrid’s Jose Gimenez, John Stones of Everton and Paris Saint-Germain’s Marquinhos all options, according to reports from the London Evening Standard.
The Blues have endured a dreadful defence of their Premier League crown so far and appear in line to miss out on qualification for any form of European competition.
But, that won’t hinder their grand plans for the looming summer transfer window, with Marquinhos, Gimenez and Stones all, according to reports, options to bolster Guus Hiddink’s eventual successor’s rearguard.
Stones is long-term target for the club, who lodged numerous bids for his signature last year, only to see Everton knock them back at each occasion.
PSG’s Marquinhos is another to have been aligned with the club a number of times and he could look to move on this year with game time relatively hard to come by with the Parisians due to the presence of Thiago Silva and David Luiz.
Gimenez is also under consideration after emerging at Atletico.
The Uruguayan has been lauded for his commanding performances at the age of 21, and reports claim that he was actually ahead of Stones on the Londoners’ wish list last summer.
