Spurs are though to have been tracking the 18-year-old for some time, and have been impressed by his performances for Botafogo in his home country.
New White Hart Lane sporting director Franco Baldini believes that the teenager could become one of the leading defenders in world football, and sees him as a better prospect than Marquinhos – a player he took to Roma during his last role – who recently joined Paris Saint-Germain for £27m.
But, ‘The Special One’ is ready to snap up Doria, and has already made an enquiry ahead of a potential move for the youngster.
The Brazilian international has a release clause in his contract of £11.2m, which could be triggered fairly easily by Tottenham or Chelsea.
As well as the Premier League duo, the likes of Barcelona, Juventus and AC Milan are all thought to be tracking Doria.
Botafogo president Mauricio Assumpcao wants to keep his fledgling talent, but admitted that he may have very little say in the matter:
“Right now I can’t guarantee that Doria will stay. Negotiations will depend on whether clubs pay his buy-out fee.
“It will be the player’s ¬decision.”
Should Chelsea spend big to steal Doria away from Tottenham?
