According to a report from Italian publication Calciomercato, Chelsea have made Bundesliga side Leverkusen’s Leon Bailey their primary target for the January transfer window.
Chelsea’s dramatic 96th-minute equaliser -and Blues assistant coach Marco Ianni’s celebration of it – stole both the headlines and a point from visitors Manchester United and Jose Mourinho on Saturday, and surfacing reports on Sunday night of their club’s reignited interest in Bailey will have been the icing on the cake for many Chelsea fans.
The 21-year-old, valued at £40.5m by Transfermarkt, has been a long-term target for the London club, with the five-time Premier League winners even trying to sign him when he was at Genk before the winger opted for a move to Bayer 04 instead, according to Sky Sports.
The Jamaican speedster’s stellar 17/18 season put him on the map as he scored 12 goals and recorded six assists in all competitions and as a result was then subject to interest from Liverpool and Chelsea – again – in the summer.
With both Willian and Pedro now on the wrong side of thirty and rumours of Eden Hazard’s exit aplenty, many Blues fans were delighted to read that their club will be in for Bailey in the new year but others feel that he would be an unnecessary signing.
Here’s how they reacted on Twitter.
4 goals and 0 assists in his last 25 matches. Added to that he's just signed a new contract and his dad/agent has a massive ego.
Maybe January 2018 I would have loved this move, but think there are other better alternatives now.

Bailey on the right would be an unreal upgrade on Willian & Pedro.

How about we save cash, trust youth and fix the striker situation. Supported Morata for a year…. it’s time… THIS January

I will never say no for a talented young left footed RW. Hopefully the club has finally realised that we need some fresh blood on that wing in order to replace the old ones Pedro and Willian. Adding him could give Sarri option to use Hazard as CF if strikers still firing blanks
