Chelsea manager Conte told to ‘get on with it’

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has been told by former Manchester United star Phil Neville that he needs to forget about excuses and get on with the job at hand.

The Italian coach had a defeatist attitude on Saturday following the team’s shock 1-0 loss to West Ham United.

Marko Arnautovic’s early goal was the difference at the London Stadium, and as a result, the Blues have dropped 14 points adrift of leaders Manchester City.

Conte admitted to reporters after the final whistle that the club’s defence of the title will be unsuccessful.

The former Juventus boss also claimed that fatigue plagued his players following their midweek Champions League action against Atletico Madrid.

Last season, the Blues stormed to the league title without the commitments of European football, but in the 2017-18 campaign, the club have been fighting on all fronts.

While carrying out punditry duties on BBC’s Match of the Day, Neville criticised Conte for making excuses.

“In terms of fixtures they had it easier last year with no Champions League, but he’s talking too much about tiredness and the fixture list. He’s moaning about having matches after the Champions League.

“He probably is [making a point] about the size of his squad, and that he didn’t bring in the players he wanted in the summer. But I think if your manager is talking about tiredness then it does affect your team. I think he needs to get on with it.”
