Chelsea Milinkovic-Savic deal would kill Loftus-Cheek’s hopes of playing time

Chelsea are ready to battle Manchester United for powerhouse midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, according to Corriere Dello Sport, via TalkSport.

What’s the story, then?

The report claims that the offer from Stamford Bridge should take them into pole position for the Lazio man, ahead of both United and European champions Real Madrid.

They say that Lazio have lowered their demands – although they still remain colossal at around £115m – which potentially shows a willingness to do a deal.

The report also suggests that Cesc Fabregas is one existing Chelsea player who could be used as bait in the deal in order to lower the asking price.

Chelsea are already packed to the brim with central midfielders and the arrival of Jorginho only serves to add to the competition in the engine room.

It remains to be seen how Maurizio Sarri will format the Chelsea midfield but he can surely only create a maximum of three spaces and two will likely be taken up by N’Golo Kante and Jorginho.

A mega-money deal for Milinkovic-Savic would surely mean that he is a regular starter as well, meaning the likes of Fabregas, Danny Drinkwater, Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have to be content with backup roles.

For Loftus-Cheek, who needs a huge season on the back of the World Cup in order to cement his England place and finally begin to realise his potential, that will simply not do.

Yet another big-money midfield acquisition would surely send a definitive message to the England man that he has to move on to get the regular football he needs.
