According to reliable West Ham United club insider @ExWHUemployee on his latest The West Ham Way blog, the east London club are considering making a summer move for Marseille winger Florian Thauvin, who is rated at £45m by Transfermarkt, and Chelsea, whose fans don’t want the club to sign £54m striker, should be watching developments closely.
Well, new Irons manager Manuel Pellegrini is desperate to strengthen his newly-inherited squad this summer in order to ensure they improve on a 13th-placed Premier League finish last season, and @ExWHUemployee says the Chilean is watching a number of Ligue 1 players, including the 25-year-old.
The France international was involved in a remarkable 44 goals – 26 goals and 18 assists – for his team in 54 appearances in all competitions during the 2017/18 campaign, as per Transfermarkt, and it would be a surprise if he isn’t on the radar of a number of top European clubs.
@ExWHUemployee adds that the Hammers are slightly wary of the fact that he flopped with Newcastle United previously, although his current form suggests that he has improved and matured since his spell at St James’ Park.
Well, the Blues may well have a huge overhaul of their squad this summer following a miserable defence of their 2017 top flight title, which saw them finish fifth and miss out on a place in the Champions League.
While Eden Hazard is safe on the left flank, Antonio Conte – or indeed his replacement given he is far from certain of keeping his job – may well want a replacement for the likes of Willian and Pedro on the right.
Thauvin has shown in terms of goals and assists – and the fact that he successfully completed 148 dribbles in 47 Ligue 1 and Europa League outings, as per WhoScored.com.
Marseille are unlikely to let him go on the cheap however, and Chelsea may need to pay big to bring the Frenchman back to England.
