Emerson Palmieri waited a long time to break into the Chelsea side, but the Brazilian-born ace showed on Monday that the Blues still need a new left back this summer.
Marcos Alonso has long been a fixture in the Chelsea side due to his incredible ability to grab goals and assists from defence, but his defensive deficiencies have always aggravated sections of the fan base.
And those sections of fans have become louder and more numerous during the club’s defensive struggles this season, leading to the emergence of Emerson as a genuine option over the Spaniard and calls for a new signing in the summer.
It was the ex-Roma ace who got the nod on Monday night when Burnley rocked up to Stamford Bridge, but his performance left a lot to be desired.
Emerson made zero tackles, interceptions or clearances in the match, and won just one aerial duel, and if you’re thinking that’s simply because Burnley didn’t attack enough then the numbers of his teammates tell a different story, per Whoscored.
César Azpilicueta made five tackles, David Luiz contributed two tackles and three clearances and Andreas Christensen mustered a tackle and five clearances, while all the Brazilian full back did was watch as Ashley Barnes snuck in at the back post for the visitors’ second goal.
And it’s not like he made up for his defensive anonymity with impressive play at the other end either, completing just one of his nine cross attempts, or 11 per cent.
Which team is the dominant force in London right now? Playmaker FC’s Tom Skinner has a very unpopular opinion on the matter. Check it out in the video below…
Strikers like Gonzalo Higuain and Olivier Giroud feed off crosses, but the 24 year-old’s final ball is simply not good enough.
Emerson was seen as the next in line to take over from Alonso, but based on performances like this, left back is now yet another position the Blues must go out and upgrade in the transfer market this summer.
