Chelsea open door for £43m summer swoop

Chelsea have stepped up their pursuit of Atletico Madrid sensation Koke, with reports from AS revealing that the Blues had the midfielder watched over the weekend.

The 23-year-old is considered to be one of Spanish football’s top young talents, and played a big role in the Rojiblancos’ stunning 2013/14 campaign – in which they claimed the La Liga title and reached the Champions League semi-final.

Koke is a hero at the club after coming through their youth ranks, and despite signing a new contract last summer top clubs are chasing him.

Chelsea are believed to be at the front of the queue, with technical director Michael Emenalo having travelled to Spain over the weekend to watch Atleti’s 2-1 win against Deportivo La Coruna.

The Vicente Calderon outfit are reluctant to sell and are holding out for a release clause-triggering £50m, but the Premier League leaders are hopeful they can do business for closer to £43m.
