Chelsea plot Barcelona swoop

Marc Bartra (Barcelona)Chelsea are pondering a January move for Barcelona centre-back Marc Bartra, according to reports from TuttoMercato.

Blues chief Jose Mourinho is believed to be keen to invest in his first-team squad when the transfer window re-opens as he looks to boost his options to keep his side in the Premier League title race.

Bartra has emerged as one of ‘The Special One’s’ top targets, with his future at the Nou Camp far from clear.

The 22-year-old is desperate to play regular football, but his path into the starting XI is firmly blocked by Carlos Puyol and Gerard Pique.

Even when the first choice pair have been injured, Bartra has often been overlooked in favour of defensive midfielder Javier Mascherano for a spot at the heart of the defence.

The youngster managed just three La Liga starts last term, which has led him to consider a move away from the club.

Although Mourinho has plenty of central defensive options, he sees Bartra as a top future talent and is keen to snap him up on the cheap while the opportunity to do so is present.

The Portuguese coach knows much about the player following a spell managing Barca’s rivals, Real Madrid.
