Chelsea are ready to offer former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso a second chance at life in the Premier League after talks regarding a new contract with Real Madrid broke down, according to reports from The Express.
The 32-year-old’s current deal at the Bernabeu expires at the end of the season, which has led to rumours of a Bosman move next summer.
Despite some suggestions that Alonso was keen to extend his stay in Madrid, it has now emerged that the World Cup-winning veteran has spurned the offer of a new contract with Los Blancos.
The La Liga giants are understood to have presented the playmaker with a two-year extension – with the option of another 12 months on top of that – but he has opted against putting pen to paper.
This has alerted Jose Mourinho, who is looking at drafting the man he once managed in at the end of the season.
A January swoop remains a possibility, but a free transfer looks to be the most likely outcome.
Mourinho coached Alonso while at Real, and is known to be a huge fan of the experienced ace’s abilities.
Liverpool are also in the hunt, but it appears unlikely that the Reds will set up a reunion with the player who was a part of their memorable Champions League win in 2005.
